The day I met Gordon B. Hinckley:
On August 16, 1991, I led the Color Guard detail at the BYU commencement ceremony. As we waited for the procession to begin, we were greeted by a few notable Church leaders including then-First-Counselor Gordon B. Hinckley. They shook each of our hands and we exchanged pleasantries for a moment before we began. The Color Guard led the slow walk across campus. Hinckley and company followed immediately behind us, followed by the faculty, staff and graduates. Since President Hinckley was only a step behind me for several minutes, I could hear his conversation. He was chatting with L. Tom Perry about someone in his ward. It was quite funny.
It just so happens that there was a photographer standing by that day. If you look closely, you’ll see my profile between the flags.
Also in the photo, between Hinckley and me, are Sergeant Major James Arguello (in the soft cap with his face partially covered) and cadet Brent Forsgren (silver helmet looking toward the camera). I don’t remember the name of the cadet on the far right of the photograph.
I saved this newspaper clipping from the Daily Universe and dug it out of my dusty closet over the weekend. Pres. Hinckley, thank you for your great example and generous service. We will miss you! God be with you.
