As some of you know, Robin is starting a new job a week from today (more details later). That means that we have that glorious opportunity: a between-job break! One week.
After much consideration, we decided that this was a great chance to head south. We’re on our way to pick up a rental car in 3 minutes.
Our main goal connects back to an underlying theme since we moved to DC. We’re trying to piece together the history of this great country. One of the critical periods in our history is the Civil War era. So, we thought it was important to try and get a sense of what the South was like at that time. We’ll be looking for a couple of important pieces: Civil War battlefield sites (Appomattox Courthouse, Fort Sumter), an antebellum plantation, and whatever else crosses our path.
Don’t worry, we’re bringing the new camera!
Here’s our map, an empty canvas (blue “c” marks a civil war site):

You guys MUST read Confederates in the Attic, by Tony Horwitz. Read while you’re driving, or download it to your iphone. Seriously. It’s a must for this kind of trip.
