After a not-so-great breakfast and a longer-than-expected drive from Raleigh, we arrived in Charleston South Carolina.
South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union. It was here in Charleston that the first shots of the war were fired, at Fort Sumter – more on that tomorrow.
Charleston is a port city which dates back to the second half of the 17th century. There are still remaining pre-war buildings and streets. Very quaint. Around the time of the civil war, it had a population of 11,000, almost half of which were black slaves. Wow.
You guys gotta get the book! Seriously! Go to Borders or Barnes & Noble NOW… Confederates in the Attic… your trip will be totally different… at least go look at it!
Jenny- we have been listening to it on our drive– Thanks for the recommendation. It’s kinda crazy here in Charleston they have this HUGE statute dedicated to the guy who fired on Ft. Sumter to start the civil war. It was placed there by the daughters of the confederacy of course. weird.
