(Video Keith Loutit, 2009)
With the advent of Digital VSLR cameras, that is Digital Cameras that have interchangeable lenses which also record video (like the Canon 5D Mark II which has rocked the digital world in the last year), videos like this are more available to the “amateur” videographer.
Note how everything has a toy-like quality. That’s because of a special lens called a tilt-shift lens which allows the photographer to alter the focal plane in a way that looks as though you’re filming something in miniature. It’s really quite a fascinating optical illusion – that our brain says “that’s in miniature” when all that is different from a standard video is the focus of parts of the video.
This video was created by Australian Keith Loutit, and he has several others like it on his Vimeo page. Thank you Keith!

love the music. the tilt shift creates a crazy illusion.
The other thing that lends itself to the miniature feel is the angle. Where were these shots taken from? Especially the tracking time-lapse shots from the ambiguous high angle. Very cool.
Shots were taken from a port in Sydney I assume. It’s not my vid, but the guy is from Sydney.
