Just today, two separate friends emailed me about France, so I have to say it's on the brain. I took this photo inside the main reception hall of the Castle at Beynac (the colors were manipulated to give it that "I'm cool and artsy" feel). I like to imagine the conversations happening here in the 12th century. This castle was built 400 years before Henry Hudson, who sailed 400 years ago this year! (Canon 5D Mark II)

I grabbed this image recently on a trip to beautiful France. The blue coloring was added for effect. I love the way it makes it look like winter, just by adding a color. (Canon 5D Mark II; 1/800 @ f/4; ISO 6400)

Gigantic Freak Doors

Now that I’m back in the States (bittersweet), I’ll be going through the media I collected in France and posting some stuff here on Pixelshot over the next few days/weeks. One of the images that sticks out in my mind are some giant doors that Ben showed me as we were checking out the Saturday market in a nearby town.

Now we’ve all seen doors, but these were of a different league entirely than any door I’ve ever seen. They stretched to nearly the entire height of the building. So, big that I couldn’t get them all in the photo without being across the courtyard. I challenge anyone to find me some bigger doors!!

This is a renovated cathedral in Sarlat.

Work in Beynac

You’d think a trip to France would involve sitting on a porch, enjoying the cool air and relaxing. Well, that’s not what my trip has been like. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve loved it. But, Ben and I have put in several 15+ hour days in a row. I still have not even been inside the castle that is right next door!

Oh well, there’s always tomorrow. Of course, when we looked at the hours for the places we wanted to visit tomorrow, they’re closed on Saturday. Bummer. Oh well, could be worse.

Beynac Church Bells

The church bells ring on the hour and half hour from 7 till 7. At 7pm they go crazy for a few minutes. Ben and I were enjoying the spectacular sunset while the bell started ringing. Miss you all, especially our wives, Robin and Stephanie. See you soon!

Chez Brubaker – Clearing a stone wall

Beynac, France. It’s not every day you get to spend remodeling a home built sometime between the 11th and 15th century. This wall, on the second floor, was covered with plaster some time in the recent past. Ben wanted to remove the plaster to show the original stone. Once the plaster is all removed, a mason will come in and do a finish and fill in the cracks a bit.

This time lapse was made in about 5 hours.

On the way to France

Taking a week-long trip to see a friend in France. The only bummer is that Robin has to hold down the fort in DC.
