POD – Tiananmen Square June 5, 1989

Twenty years ago today, this photo was taken by photojournalist Jeff Widener in Beijing, China. It was taken in the midst of the horrific events of Tiananmen Square where many students had held protests, demanding some basic civil liberties. The Chinese government cracked down with a heavy hand. Many unarmed people were killed. This photo came to be the symbol of the people's resistance. One man facing a string of tanks. The tanks stopped, the man was eventually taken off the street unharmed. -- Courage.

Last View of Hubble

Ok, the space geek in me had to post this video from NASA. It’s a short clip from inside the Atlantis as it disconnects from Hubble and drifts away. Since this is the last planned service mission to Hubble, it’s likely that this is the last time anyone will see the telescope from the outside up close. Of course, we’ll surely see images that the new and improved Hubble telescope takes and sends to Earth, just not the telescope itself.
